Dubai residents can make bill inquiries, account details, billing and other services provided by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) through ChatGPT as artificial intelligence (AI) adoption is growing in the country.
The utility provider in Dubai said on Sunday that its customers can also seek account support, access EV Green Charger locations and directions to the nearest station, as well as information on Customer Happiness Centre locations, working hours and contact channels through ChatGPT.
Dewa said it’s the first government entity and the first utility worldwide to provide its services through AI platforms.
It said additional services will be introduced gradually, in line with its governance, security and privacy framework.
World’s first AI-native utility
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa, said they are moving steadily to establish the Dubai-listed company as the world’s first AI-native utility.
“Today, the world is witnessing a fundamental shift in customer behaviour, with AI platforms becoming a primary channel for interacting with government and service entities. Launching Dewa’s services through ChatGPT Apps Directory strengthens our role in adopting advanced smart solutions and delivering resilient, proactive and secure services that enhance quality of life and provide a seamless customer experience, while supporting Dubai’s position as a global hub for AI and sustainable innovation,” he said.
“The ‘AI Integration and Operating Services’ initiative is a pivotal step in our journey to reshape government services in the AI era, transitioning from traditional digital interaction models to a comprehensive service system integrated with global AI platforms. This enables direct access to Dewa’s services through intelligent interactive platforms, including natural conversational interfaces such as ChatGPT and multi-agent systems,” added Al Tayer.
AI adoption in the UAE continues to accelerate, with OpenAI reporting last year that its user base in the country has tripled over the past year. About 60 per cent of residents aged 18–24 and half of those aged 25–34 use ChatGPT every week, it said.
